Frequently asked questions.
Why is the bridge closed?
The moat-bridge was deemed unsafe by English Heritage, who are the Guardians of Nunney Castle. The decision was taken by English Heritage to close the bridge in October 2024. The bridge remains closed pending replacement.
Who owns Nunney Castle?
Robbie Walker. It has been in the Walker family since his father, Rob, bought it in 1951. See gallery for a picture of Rob Walker in front of the castle.
What part does English Heritage play?
They are responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and insuring the Castle. As Guardians, it is ultimately their decision to do what is necessary.
When can we expect the new moat-bridge?
Unfortunately, we cannot give you an exact date at this stage so it is best not to speculate. However, it will not be this year (2025). Please subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on Facebook to remain informed.
What format or design will the new bridge take?
Several different designs have been put forward. We would like to see an updated one similar to the current structure. Material design will probably be a combination of wood and metal.
How much will the new bridge cost?
The cost depends on many different factors, longevity and safety being prime. We are estimating the cost to between £50K and £70K, subject to final design and contract award.
How long will it take to construct once the contract is signed?
We estimate the build will last 2 to 3 months and hope this will happen in 2026.
How will the money be raised. Can we donate?
We are currently in touch with local business with a view to them helping. Individual donations are most welcome. We will advise when this is set up. Again, please subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on Facebook to remain informed.
